These eleven orderly books record Tallmadge's activities as an officer of the Continental Line. Included are plans for marches, orders, paroles issued, copies of letters sent and records of daily activities. Tallmadge was stationed at various locations throughout New York State including New Windsor, Poughkeepsie, Fort Plank, and Morristown. The orderly books provide accounts of daily regimental activities such as assignments for watch duty, patrol duties and work details.

Samuel Tallmadge was born at Brookhaven, N.Y. on November 23, 1755 and died April 1, 1825 at Charleston, N.Y. He married Mary Hilton of Albany, N.Y. in 1783. Tallmadge was an active merchant at Rhinebeck, N.Y. and later at Charleston, where he also operated a farm. Tallmadge was a member of the Suffolk County General Association and enlisted in the Continental Army in 1776.
